Although it is known for hundreds of years that having intercourse twice a week is sensible, most people ignore that fact. Biologically, this frequency provides the best results („Twice a week, that’s 104 times a year, and it doesn’t harm neither her nor me.” Quotation by Martin Luther).
Studies are going one step further. Reactive oxygen radicals, which can damage cells, seem to be the reason for a bad sperm quality when being abstinent for more than 5 days. Therefore an abstinence not exceeding 2-3 days is recommended, especially before having an IVF or ICSI treatment! This means, that having intercourse on a regular basis every 2-3 days is advisable, since it lowers the risk of poor sperm quality.
Men reach their sexual peak between 21 and 24, then it declines very slowly up to the age of 30. After that, however, (individual variations possible) a rapid drop could be noticed.
When trying to get pregnant, it is helpful to put a pillow under her buttocks before intercourse. Afterwards, the woman should rest on her back for at least an hour.
To begin with, the position during intercourse is not crucial, as long as the penis can fully penetrate the vagina. However, positions could play a decisive role if the location of the uterus differs (your gynaecologist will inform you whether your uterus is located more towards the front or resp. the back of your body. In this case it is doubtful whether the cervix is sufficiently immersed in seminal fluid after ejaculation when the woman is lying on her back. Intercourse should then be practised with the woman in the knee-elbow or stomach-side position.
As urine and other fluids are exceptionally harmful to sperm, men should avoid urinating at least 30 min before intercourse, women shouldn't use any kind of vaginal-irrigation.
