The strain and the connected health problems should be kept to a minimum for the woman. Complications, as with any other treatment, may occur. Some specific pregnancy conditions (eg. miscarriage, early contractions) may arise. In this case, an IVF pregnancy is no different to a normal pregnancy. However, there is a higher chance of multiple pregnancy. When 3 embryos are transferred, there is a 10% chance of having twins, and a 2% chance of having triplets (Pictures 11-13).
Basically, there is also a risk of experiencing an abdominal or tubal pregnancy after the embryo transfer. Tubal pregnancies occur in about 2% of normal pregnancies. It increases to about 5% after the embryo transfer, when the woman still has parts of her fallopian tubes.
One typical complication of hormone therapy is the so-called “hyperstimulation”. This involves an enlargement of the ovaries, development of cysts and pressure in the lower abdominal region. In rare cases - but also when a woman becomes pregnant - she may need to be hospitalized for a short time. The hyperstimulation resolves by itself.
