Infertility can be the result of not having any egg cells, or ripe sperm cells. When egg cells don’t develop, it is usually due to an interference in the interaction of different hormone-building glands (hypophysis, ovaries, thyroid gland, adrenal cortex etc). This kind of disease has to be discovered first by doing hormone analysis, in order to treat it afterwards. The sperm production can be proved by testing the seminal fluid under the microscope. 3 to 5 days before the examination there should not be an ejaculation.
Millions of motile sperm cells are necessary to fertilize an egg, however only a few reach the Fallopian tubes. The egg in the Fallopian tube has to be surrounded by hundreds of sperm cells in order to be fertilized. Therefore if there are not enough motile sperm cells, a fertilization will not occur.
The cause is not only due to a hormone deficiency. There are usually defects in the testis themselves, which are more difficult to treat ( like the egg ripening process in the woman).
Special tests are needed for the diagnosis. We can try to increase the number of motile sperms by giving certain medication and hormones. As for now however, there are not a lot of treatment options for diseases, which originate in the testicles.
